User Explorer

User explorer is an analysis tool in GA4 that checks the event timeline of individual users, and is used to understand on an individual basis which actions a user took before failing to convert.

User explorer visualizes the raw event flow at the individual user level rather than aggregate metrics. When you set a specific segment condition, a list of users that satisfy the condition appears, and when you select a user from the list, you can check which events that user triggered and in what order through the timeline.

In accordance with privacy regulations, users are represented by identifiers rather than displayed names or email addresses. If you set up User ID, you can track logged-in users across devices.

It is useful when checking the behavior patterns of users who failed to convert at an individual level. For example, you can set up a segment of users who started but did not complete a reservation form, and directly observe where those users stopped in the event sequence.

Key takeaways

  • Set segment conditions to query the filtered list of user pseudo IDs.
  • When you click on an individual user, you can see that user's entire event timeline in chronological order.
  • When setting User ID, you can connect the same user across devices.
  • To protect personal information, real names and emails are not displayed and only the pseudo ID is used.
  • GA4 Screen Location: Explore > Select 'User Explorer' template.

Frequently asked questions

Does user explorer have any privacy issues?

GA4 does not collect personally identifiable information such as real name or email, so only the pseudo ID is displayed in user explorer. However, when linking User ID with login information, processing policies in accordance with the personal information protection laws of the relevant country must be observed.

Can I create an audience based on specific users I see in User Explorer?

There is no functionality to directly create audiences from individual user IDs. The method is used to analyze the common attributes of the user, create segments with the same conditions, and then use those segments to define audiences.
