Engagement Rate

GA4 engagement rate is the share of all sessions that are engaged sessions. It is calculated as engaged sessions divided by total sessions and adds up to 100% with bounce rate.

An engaged session exceeds the engagement-time threshold, has a key event, or has at least two page or screen views. The default time threshold is 10 seconds and can be adjusted for a web data stream.

Scrolling or watching a video does not automatically make a session engaged. Check which condition was satisfied: measured time, view count, or a configured key event.

Compare channels, landing pages, and devices to identify differences in visit patterns. Avoid applying universal engagement benchmarks to sites with different purposes and settings; examine comparable trends and completed actions together.

What should I check when engagement rate is low?

First verify that tags and key events are collected correctly. Then review the match between visitor intent and page content, loading speed, and access to key information and action buttons.
