Key Event

Key events are events that GA4 designates as actions that are particularly important to the business. First, make sure the behavior is collected correctly and then mark it as a key event.

Marking an event as a key event identifies it as important. This does not automatically create missing events or correct incorrectly collected events.

Define and then specify the behavior

When measuring inquiry reception, first check whether the event is “when the button is pressed” or “when the inquiry is successfully received.” If you designate incorrect behavior as a key event, incorrect numbers will be counted as critical outcomes.

Check success, failure, and duplication

Test behavior not only on successful completion, but also on paths such as input errors, refreshes, and retries. Ensure that the event name and required parameters are passed as intended, and distinguish between the fact that the tag was fired and the fact that the analysis tool received it.

When linking to an ad conversion

You can create Google Ads conversions based on GA4 key events. At this point, we check whether the action is being used for ad optimization, whether it overlaps with an existing conversion, and whether the value and counting settings are correct. Grouping simple clicks and purchases at the same level of importance can cause your bidding goals to differ from your business goals.

Key takeaways

  • Identifies important actions in GA4 reports.
  • Validate collection before marking key events.
  • Check for goals and overlaps when linking Google Ads conversions.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to designate every page view as a key event?

First, determine whether the page view itself is a business goal. Grouping every page view into a key action can make it difficult to read changes in inquiries or purchases.
