Keyword Difficulty

Keyword difficulty is a tool’s estimate of search competition. Methods and scales differ, so fixed thresholds cannot be carried across tools as universal ranking criteria.

Ahrefs KD, for example, uses referring domains of the top ten organic pages and excludes on-page factors. It therefore does not evaluate every aspect of intent or content fit.

Match tool, country and collection date when narrowing candidates, then inspect actual results. Consider existing content, missing information and available production and review resources.

Avoid generic boundaries such as “below 30–40 is easy.” A low score may still be irrelevant to the business, while a difficult topic may be essential for customers.
